Backstory: "Claudia," Marie Well made her final word her daughter's name, and as she said it, she sank into death, in the hospital bed, she had died from giving birth. How did this moment get to be this way? Well, Marie, Claudia's mother, as well as her father, Rick, were part of a research group to find ways to make children throughout Panem stronger, smarter, and better people personality wise. They had spent a decade and a half working on a pill for pregnant people to eat, only once in the pregnancy, at the very beginning, and it would make their children the amazing people that was promised. Finally, they had finshed their first pill, most likely to become a prototype, they knew. But who to test it on? They wondered, Marie and Rick as well, but then their questions were answered when Marie got pregnant; and volunteered to try the pill.
It had mostly worked; except for three things. One, the pill's ingredients sucked valuable nutrients during labor, and so the mother would always die. Two, the personality of the child would have ONE flaw, which they discovered in Claudia, that it was sarcasm, she loved sarcasm. And three? That they would be afraid of their skills; therefore not using it, which defeated the point of the pill.
They discovered all of this by the research they did on Claudia. Yes, she lived with her father, but she was homeschooled since school was needed, by the researchers to see her progress, and they would have brain scans twice a week. They would have new questions for her daily, and they also gave her therapy on her fears. She began to know all of the researchers by name. Paul, Dave, Petunia, Caleb, Kiki, Noa, Brittany, George. It was basically her home, the research facility.
One day they ran out of things to do with the research. They had begun an attempt at a new pill, and then an idea struck. They needed to see the skills in action. They wanted Claudia to volunteer, but only if she wanted to. She accepted. She was going to volunteer just as her mother had.
